Welcome to the Bamboo Haus Mahjong community and the definitive hub for mahjong lessons, open play, guided play and pop-up mahjong socials. We also bring the joy of mahjong to fundraisers, private parties, bridal showers and corporate events.
We are based in South Florida (Delray Beach/Boca Raton/The Palm Beaches) and Westchester County, New York including the Rivertowns and Fairfield County.
We teach both American Mahjong and Hong Kong Style Mahjong. Our approach to teaching is personal and hands-on and we are immensely proud of the communities we have cultivated since beginning to teach and host in 2024.

At the heart of Bamboo Haus Mahjong there is a deep respect for the rich history of the original Chinese tile game. We honor its roots while creating a welcoming space where new players of all ages, backgrounds and levels can gather, play and connect. For us, Mahjong has always been more than a game—it’s an opportunity to build friendships, connect with the history, share stories and create meaningful connections around the table.
A Community Built Around the Table
A little about us…
Bamboo Haus Mahjong was co-founded in January 2024 by Julia Downes and Young-Yi Clinton in Irvington, NY. First friends, then mahjong enthusiasts, we recognized an opportunity to foster community and share our love of the game with friends & neighbors.
Since then, Julia relocated to Delray Beach, Florida where she continues to teach mahjong and has built a thriving new community of players. She teaches and hosts regular social playing events at many venues in Delray Beach and Boca Raton including Red Pine Restaurant & Bar, Hawkers Delray, and Farmer’s Table.
Young-Yi teaches and hosts regular events at The Lark Club in Irvington, the JCC in Tarrytown and in many other local community organizations in Westchester and Fairfield Counties She has led numerous corporate team building and fundraising events in NYC and the Tri-State area.
Julia and Young-Yi teach both American Mahjong and Hong Kong Style Mahjong.
